IUSD announced the three Teachers of the Year and the four Teachers of Promise for the 2022-23 school year today.
IUSD’s Teacher of the Year program recognizes exceptional instructors at the high, middle and elementary school levels. Below are this year’s Teacher of the Year honorees.
2022-2023 Teachers of the year
Jon Resendez – Social Science, Portola High School
As a trailblazing dreamer and innovator, Jon was the perfect candidate to help open IUSD’s newest high school in 2015. Jon is committed to his school and the greater community in IUSD through his involvement in mentoring his colleagues in the social sciences. Of particular note is his work with student advocacy and he leads the Sacramento student trip, where IUSD students meet with California legislators to share their perspective on educational policy.
Alma Alexander - Science, Lakeside Middle School
Alma is an outstanding science teacher who creates a dynamic, supportive, and engaging classroom environment for all learners. She started the student group "Mariners for Change” at Lakeside that encourages students to find ways to create positive change on their campus, in their communities, and/or globally.
Liz Harlow – Kindergarten, Canyon View Elementary
Liz’s passion for literacy and her willingness to share that with students, staff, colleagues and the Canyon View community makes her a standout teacher at the elementary school level. She has been involved in early reading and literacy initiatives in the district for many years and is very well respected by her peers.
Excellence in Teaching Awards Banquet
All of this year’s honorees will be formally recognized in April at the Excellence in Teaching Awards program, organized each year by the Irvine Teachers Association and IUSD.
