Each year, when I visit our schools, I am reminded why education remains the most powerful tool that exists in our world. Watching learning unfold in spaces where students are seen and supported, invested, and excited, demonstrates how effectively our teachers and staff connect with our students to help them make meaning. That personal, human aspect of education will always be crucial to learning, and the reason we have such an established record of success in our schools is because we couple that human connection with artful, strategic, and innovative instruction that continues to evolve to meet the needs of our students.
While debates have always existed about the use of technology in schools, it’s critical to recognize that since we opened our doors in 1972, we have leveraged emerging technologies to improve instruction for students and efficiency for staff. This year, we have also taken definitive steps to ensure that we protect instructional time by proactively filtering content to reduce digital distractions and to encourage the primary use of technology for creation and education. Our Balanced Technology Initiative represents a very IUSD approach, which involves protecting and optimizing instruction without resorting to blanket measures or stifling creativity or innovation. To understand our commitment to the purposeful use of technology, I would encourage you to read more about our Balanced Technology Initiative.
We are officially navigating the end of a very busy school year, and we know this time can often feel a little frenzied, but in the midst of all of the energy, excitement, and exhaustion, there should be the recognition that, through our collective and collaborative efforts, we have supported the learning journeys of more than 37,000 students. In every classroom and on every campus, our students are thriving. Witnessing their growth, watching them navigate challenges with perseverance and joy, and seeing their ingenuity and sense of wonder should remind us to celebrate our students, our staff, and what will soon be the end of another successful school year.
Celebrating the great work happening in our schools doesn’t mean that we aren’t aware of the challenges, and there isn’t a day that I don’t think about how many of these challenges could be resolved if we were simply funded at the state average. IUSD receives thousands less in per-pupil funding, which limits our ability to support our programs and means we must continue to advocate for funding for our schools. IUSD’s legislative priorities reflect this commitment. Despite these very real budget constraints, we have compelling evidence, each day, that when our community comes together, we can overcome so much and achieve what for many districts would be unimaginable.
Here are simply a few of the many accolades our schools and students earned this year:
- IUSD Ranks No. 1 in California for State Standardized Testing
- IUSD Named a Best Community for Music Education for 15th Consecutive Year
- IUSD High Schools Ranked in the Top 5% of California Schools

Each of these recognitions reflects the power of our school community - a community that invests in education and works together to ensure our students succeed. As we head into what we hope are slower summer months for our families and staff, on behalf of the Board of Education and our Leadership Team, I want to thank you again for the investment you have made in IUSD.
