The Irvine High School Girls softball team made history by capturing the CIF Southern Section Division 6 championship! They dominated the championship game with a 15-2 victory over Arroyo High School, earning the Vaqueros’ first CIF-SS championship since 1991.
From the opening inning, Irvine played dynamically, setting the tone with an aggressive offensive approach and strong execution throughout the game.
Junior pitcher Midori De Los Santos established the foundation for the Vaqueros' victory, delivering a stellar performance while allowing just one earned run. Irvine's defense was also nearly flawless, showcased by key double plays that maintained their edge. The championship moment came when shortstop Katie Liu fielded a ground ball and threw to first baseman Andrea Torres for the final out, securing their winning title that was three decades in the making.
The entire offensive lineup contributed to this win as well, with multi-hit performances from Torres and catcher Jocelyn Knerr. The Vaqueros clinched the game with six runs scored in the fifth inning.
This title is a testament to their resilience and ability to overcome tough circumstances. The team started the season at a tough 1-11. They steadily improved, overcame every challenge and battled their way to a Pacific Coast League title share before sweeping the CIF playoffs.
Head Coach James Knapp celebrated the team's incredible resilience and growth. The CIF title is a monumental achievement for Irvine High, earned through the dedication of every player, coach and supporter.
As CIF-SS Division 6 champions, they advance to the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs, which will take place from June 2 to June 6, 2026.
Congratulations, Vaqueros, and go get ‘em at State!
