IUSD is proud to recognize and celebrate 986 IUSD graduating seniors who have been awarded the State Seal of Biliteracy for demonstrating their biliteracy across 14 different languages.
Every year, graduating California public high school students earn the biliteracy gold seal, which is affixed to their diplomas, for achieving proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, or signing in one or more languages in addition to English.
This year, IUSD students received the seal in the languages of Arabic, ASL (American Sign Language), Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Russian, Spanish, Tamil and Ukrainian.
To earn the State Seal of Biliteracy, students must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in both English and at least one additional language. Students may show their mastery in English in various ways such as completing three years of high school English Language Arts coursework with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, passing the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts, earning a score of 3 or higher on the AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature and Composition exam, or achieving a score of 480 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT.
To demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English, students may complete four years of high school world language coursework (or its equivalent) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, earn a score of 3 or higher on an Advanced Placement world language exam, or pass an IUSD-approved language proficiency assessment with the required minimum score.
Congratulations to our students and World Language teachers for their teaching and proficiency in multiple languages!
