University High School’s Ocean Science Bowl team has taken home another competition victory! The team secured first place at this year’s virtual “Sponge Bowl,” a competitive event featuring top high school teams from across California and the nation.
Demonstrating exceptional depth of knowledge in marine science, biology, chemistry, and earth systems, the University High team delivered a flawless performance throughout the tournament. The team went undefeated across all rounds, consistently outperforming a strong field of competitors.
The final round saw University High face off against Arcadia High School in a fast-paced match, ultimately coming out on top with the victory.
The winning team comprises:
- Angelina Yan (Captain)
- Joanne Chen
- Matthew Feng
- Avery Hexun
- Nethra Lyer
The “Sponge Bowl,” held in a virtual format, brought together teams that typically compete in regional Ocean Science Bowl events. Despite the different setting, the intensity and academic rigor remained high, challenging students to apply both foundational knowledge and critical thinking under pressure.
“This victory is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our students,” said Uni Science Teacher and Team Coach Ruby-Ann Lopez. “Throughout the year they committed themselves to study, practice and strengthen their teamwork. I am very proud of their continued success and love how much fun they have competing and learning these subjects.”
Join us in congratulating our students on this outstanding achievement!
