Finding Moments of Joy and Connection this Holiday Season

Terry Walker's December IUSD Insights Message

As the holiday season approaches and with less than two weeks before the winter break, I would like to take a moment to reflect on and express gratitude for our partnership with the IUSD community. On behalf of the IUSD Board of Education and Leadership Team, thank you to our dedicated teachers and staff, talented students, engaged parents and guardians, and passionate community partners for your tireless efforts and collaboration in support of our students and schools. Together, we are the “US” at the center of IUSD, working in partnership to provide students with the highest quality educational experience we can envision.

As one of the highest-performing school districts in the state and nation, we prioritize a balance between academic achievement, innovative learning, and the well-being of every student. Equally important as the time spent in our classrooms are the moments spent together with family and friends —moments that build connection, resilience, and happiness. For many of us, this season brings a variety of activities, from school performances and community events to shopping lists and family gatherings. While it’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of the season, we hope you also find moments to pause, even briefly, to appreciate the simple joys around you. Whether it’s sharing a favorite holiday tradition, taking a walk together, or simply enjoying an uninterrupted conversation over a meal, these small acts of togetherness are where lasting memories are made.

Our dedicated teachers, staff, and administrators work collaboratively to provide our students with the attitudes, skills, and knowledge to help achieve their academic and personal goals, and we see the impact of their hard work every day in our schools. We also recognize that education extends far beyond the classroom. The support students receive at home is essential to their growth, and we are grateful for the role you play in nurturing their curiosity, confidence, and character.

To help support our community over the winter break, this edition of IUSD Insights includes our annual Winter Resources article, featuring information and resources available on our Mental Health and Counseling webpages, community resources, and tips for self-care. Please also see our e-vehicle safety tips (e-bikes, e-scooters, and e-skateboards). This information is helpful for students and families who already have e-vehicles or who plan on purchasing them as gifts over the holidays. As a reminder, middle and high school students riding e-vehicles to school must follow their school’s registration process. Contact your student’s school administration office for more information.

Also included is information about our Special Education team and services, Computer Science Week, IPSF’s Educational Excellence Fund, vaping prevention, and news from around the District. To learn more, please take a moment to read our December IUSD Insights.

During the winter break, we hope you take time to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most. In doing so, we can help our students return to school in January refreshed and ready to embrace new opportunities. Thank you for being such a vital part of our community, and we wish you a joyous and rejuvenating holiday season.
