On Nov. 8, third-graders from Turtle Rock Elementary School helped make history -- by studying history.

Last week, schools throughout IUSD took part in a slate of activities associated with Red Ribbon Week, which spanned Oct. 22 through Oct. 30.

Eastshore Elementary teacher Bill Brooks has racked up plenty of career highlights over the course of his 3o-plus years. But this one, he says, ranks near the top.

The IUSD Board of Education received an update this week on the district’s efforts to implement a transitional kindergarten program.

Over the course of the next nine and a half months, there will be essay questions, reading assignments, science projects and word problems. There will also be field trips, football games, high school dances and, ultimately, commencement exercises.

In recent years, IUSD has engaged in an ambitious campaign to harness solar power, cut electrical consumption, reduce waste and promote sustainability while adding an 18-lesson curriculum on sustainable energy in grades five and six.

Canyon View Elementary School will be the site of an Irvine Child Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 25. Hosted by the Joyful Child Foundation, the event will feature informational booths and demonstrations from a number of child safety organizations.

A few months back, we were introduced to members of a running club at Woodbury Elementary School called the Mustang Milers, and they had a pretty lofty goal.

Earlier this month, Brywood Elementary celebrated art, food and fashions from all over the world during the school's seventh annual BryWorld Culture Festival, which attracted scores of Irvine families.
