A writing contest established by a former Northwood High School student has announced its latest deadline for submissions. Wonder Writers, launched five years ago by Northwood graduate Govil Gupta, is calling for essays and poems from K-12 students from now through Dec. 3. Each should be tied to the theme, "My Heritage Is ... " (Check out the flier for details.) Winning entries will receive iPods and gift cards, but perhaps the biggest incentive is the chance for young writers to have their work published. Each poem and essay, after being judged by a panel of professionals, will be printed in a book that families can purchase, and the proceeds will benefit local charities. This is the seventh contest in the Wonder Writers series, and it’s a pretty brilliant concept, made all the more remarkable by the fact that Gupta came up with the idea as a high school freshman. We find it just as impressive that he’s still organizing the contest – and inspiring new writers in the process – after graduating from Northwood and moving on to Stanford University. "I know that there are lots of young writers and students out there who are still looking and need an outlet to share their voice," said Gupta said via email, "and I think it's not only Wonder Writers' mission but also responsibility to provide such a portal for them to learn, create, share, and get feedback on their work."
