IUSD Ranks No. 1 in California for State Standardized Testing

CAASPP 2023

The Irvine Unified School District ranks No. 1 in California in Science, Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) for public school districts of 35,000 or more students. This is the seventh consecutive year IUSD has outperformed both county and state averages for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), the state’s standardized assessment.

CAASPP measures students' knowledge of the California academic content standards and English language development standards. IUSD students in third to eighth grades, as well as eleventh grade, took the CAASPP assessments for Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). Additionally, students in fifth, eighth and eleventh to twelfth grades took the California Science Test (CAST).

“These results are a testament to the dedication of our teachers and the unwavering commitment of our students and parents. Their hard work and determination shine through in these remarkable results,” stated Superintendent Terry Walker. “While standardized testing is one of many ways to measure the success and knowledge of our students, these results shed light on ways we can continue to improve teaching and learning as a district.”

Please keep the following in mind about these assessments.

Assessment Scores Are Only One of Many Indicators
It's crucial to view assessment scores as just one of several indicators in the assessment of student learning. While they offer valuable insights into a student's knowledge and skills, they do not encompass the full spectrum of a student's academic capabilities. It's recommended to analyze test results alongside other measures, such as in-class assignments, classroom tests and teacher feedback. For more information on your child's academic progress, please maintain open communication with your child's teacher(s) and school.

Utilization of Test Scores
IUSD uses these scores to better understand each student’s learning and help us continue to improve upon the high-quality instruction we provide. The scores will not be used to determine student advancement to the next grade level or as the sole piece of information when making academic decisions about students.
