IUSD’s school attendance review board, also known as SARB, has been designated as a model program by the state for exemplary practices that improve student attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism rates.

The school attendance review boards operate at the local and county level with the goal of keeping students in school so they can receive a meaningful educational experience.

To honor this important work, and to spread best practices, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently designated six California school attendance review boards as model programs — Irvine Unified School District being one of them.

Thurmond commended IUSD, which has much lower chronic absenteeism rates than state and county averages, for utilizing a range of services and resources to support students and families through creative strategies that have been highly successful in keeping students on the path to success.

“A key to these schools’ plans has been a multi-tiered approach including early intervention, professional development, strategic staffing, family engagement, and school connectedness.”

Irvine Unified School District, and our SARB chairperson, Michelle Walsh, were all recognized last week by the State for exemplary practices.
