Though a bigger celebration is being planned for the dedication, IUSD staged a modest groundbreaking ceremony this week for the new athletic facility that’s under construction at University High School. It may look like a giant pit of dirt now, but this spot will ultimately be transformed into a 2,940-seat stadium that will serve as the home field for both Woodbridge and Uni high schools. The opening is pegged for September 2013, with amenities to include a ticket booth, a concessions area and restrooms on both sides. “This will surely become a place to bring families together and promote the values that we all share as a community,” IUSD Board of Education President Michael Parham told the crowd. Along with Parham, board members Gavin Huntley-Fenner, Carolyn McInerney and Sharon Wallin posed with pristine shovels for the occasion, as did Superintendent Terry Walker, Woodbridge Principal Jason Viloria and Uni Principal John Pehrson. City officials, district staff and other community members also took part. Click on the graphic above to watch a brief video of the ceremony.
