IUSD’s Natalie Baptiste Named 2026 CRLP Shefelbine Award for Leadership in Literacy Recipient

Dr. Natalie Baptiste, Director of Language Development Programs, has been named the 2026 California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP) Shefelbine Award for Leadership in Literacy recipient for the UCI/Orange County Region!

The prestigious award recognizes exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing reading and literacy in the community while honoring the legacy and spirit of the late Dr. John Shefelbine, a nationally respected literacy scholar and advocate. One recipient a year is selected for their meaningful contributions to literacy education, instructional leadership and commitment to ensuring student access to high-quality literacy learning opportunities.

Dr. Baptiste was selected unanimously for the 2026 honor in recognition of her leadership and commitment to advancing literacy for multilingual learners. She was recognized for her deep expertise in educational policy, evidence-based instructional practices and English Language Development (ELD), as well as her collaborative leadership and advocacy for equitable systems that support student success.

As noted in the CRLP UCI/OC Region's remarks, Dr. Baptiste’s leadership has made a profound impact both regionally and statewide.

Dr. Baptiste has dedicated more than 25 years to education and has served the IUSD community for over four years. Throughout her career, she has supported providing equitable access to rigorous learning opportunities and has worked extensively to strengthen outcomes for multilingual learners. She earned her Doctorate in Education from Brandman University and Masters in Education from California State University, Long Beach.
