The Northwood High School Theatre Department will stage four performances of “The Diviners,” a thought-provoking drama by Jim Leonard, Jr., Oct. 27 through Oct. 30. Here's a quick plot overview, courtesy of the show's director:
The townspeople of Zion, Indiana are searching for something to believe in. As the Great Depression of the 1930’s hits and the dust bowl begins to spread, the ability to find water (known as divining) becomes a commodity. Buddy Layman, the boy who is afraid of water, is ironically the one diviner in town who never disappoints. Although Buddy provides a crucial service to the town, he himself is in need of constant care, which taxes the patience of Buddy’s father and sister. When C.C. Showers, a former preacher determined to give up the profession comes to town, the two form an immediate bond. While this play centers on the relationship of these two outsiders, the message of determination and the struggle to find something to cling to seems to strike a chord within our present day culture.
Theatre teacher Angela Hanigan notes that the production is a pretty serious, PG-rated drama that may not be suitable for younger children.
