The December 17, 2024, Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) Board of Education Meeting marked the end of the 2024 session. It included the Board's annual organization, the swearing-in of Board Members, the presentation of the First Interim Report, and the appointment of the Interim Superintendent.
Board Organization
The five-member governing team selected its new leadership for the upcoming year. Katie McEwen was chosen to serve as President of the Board, while Dr. Jeff Kim was tapped to serve as Board Clerk. Both positions are one-year terms.
They also approved school site liaison assignments, determined Board Member committee participation, appointed representatives to various District committees, and established meeting dates through December 2025. The next two regular Board Meetings are scheduled for January 28 and February 18, 2025.
Additionally, Board Members and Superintendent Terry Walker thanked outgoing President Cyril Yu for his leadership and dedication throughout the past year.
Swearing-In
Lauren Brooks (Trustee Area 1), Connie Stone (Trustee Area 5), and Cyril Yu (Trustee Area 3) were officially sworn in. Superintendent Walker administered the oath of office. This is Brook's fourth term, Stone's first term, and Yu's second term.

First Interim Report
The Board also certified the First Interim Report of 2024-25 as “positive,” meaning the District is expected to meet its financial obligations for the current year and the subsequent two years. Every school district in California is required to examine and certify its financial condition as “positive,” “qualified,” or “negative” twice during each fiscal year. Positive is the ideal certification, while qualified indicates a district may not be able to meet its financial obligations for the current year and the two subsequent years. A negative certification indicates that a district will not be able to meet its financial obligations over this period.
The Second Interim Report represents the District’s financial condition as of January 31 and is due to the Orange County Department of Education by March 15 annually.
