Get to know the new FAFSA updates for 2025-26

FAFSA Information

Attention seniors and families: Do you know the latest updates to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-26 school year? These changes are designed to simplify the process but we want to ensure you know what is new and how it may impact you. Please take a moment to read the information below:

Key FAFSA Updates
  1. Who Counts as a Parent
A new tool is available to help dependent students determine which parent(s) need to provide information on their FAFSA. This ensures greater accuracy and reduces confusion.

  2. Improved Question Text and Instructions
The FAFSA form—both online and paper versions—now features clearer question text and instructions, making it easier to understand and complete.

  3. New Term for Expected Family Contribution
The term "Expected Family Contribution" (EFC) has been replaced with "Student Aid Index" (SAI), reflecting a shift in how financial aid eligibility is calculated.

  4. FSA ID Required for Everyone
Anyone providing information on the FAFSA, including parents and contributors, must have a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. This helps streamline the application process.

  5. Role-Based Application
Students and parents now log in separately to complete their respective sections of the FAFSA. While students can view the information provided in the parent section, they cannot complete it themselves.

  6. New Term: "Contributor"
The FAFSA introduces the term "Contributor," which refers to anyone providing consent and information for their federal tax data to be transferred to the form.

  7. Pop-Up Warning for Limited Aid Selection
If a student decides to let their school determine eligibility for a Direct Unsubsidized Loan, a new pop-up window will alert them that this limits access to most federal student aid.

  8. IRS Record Match Confirmation Page
Students will now see a confirmation page when their IRS records successfully match their FAFSA information, providing extra reassurance that their application is on track.

  9. FSA ID for Contributors Without Social Security Numbers
Contributors without a Social Security number can now create an FSA ID to securely access the online FAFSA form.
