Helpful Translation and Accessibility Resources

IUSD Recognizes that many families in our community may need translation support for a variety of materials. To support our community, below are some helpful tools and resources to assist with translation needs.

Please note that these directions were developed in August 2024, and some platforms or steps may have changed. For the most current information, please check with each source directly. IUSD is not responsible for the platforms listed on this website.

Mobile Devices: Language and Keyboard Preferences

Below are directions for setting language preferences on iPhones and Android devices, which can help you access information in your preferred language.  

iPhone

Setting Language Preference:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" app.
  • General: Scroll down and tap on "General."
  • Language & Region: Tap on "Language & Region."
  • iPhone Language: Tap "Add Language"
  • Select Language: Choose your preferred language from the list.
  • Confirm: Tap "Change to [preferred language] to confirm your selection.

Setting Keyboard Language:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" app.
  • General: Scroll down and tap on "General."
  • Keyboard: Tap on "Keyboard."
  • Keyboards: Tap "Keyboards."
  • Add New Keyboard: Tap "Add New Keyboard."
  • Select Keyboard: Choose your preferred keyboard language from the list.

Android

Setting Language Preference:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" app.
  • System: Scroll down and tap on "System" (or "General Management" on some devices).
  • Languages & Input: Tap on "Languages & input."
  • Languages: Tap "Languages."
  • Add a Language: Tap "Add a language."
  • Select Language: Choose your preferred language from the list and drag it to the top of the list to set it as the default.

Setting Keyboard Language:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" app.
  • System: Scroll down and tap on "System" (or "General Management" on some devices).
  • Languages & Input: Tap on "Languages & input."
  • Virtual Keyboard: Tap on "Virtual keyboard."
  • Gboard: Tap "Gboard" (or your default keyboard app).
  • Languages: Tap "Languages."
  • Add Keyboard: Tap "Add keyboard."
  • Select Keyboard: Choose your preferred keyboard language from the list.

Text-to-Voice: Spoken Content on mobile device

Text-to-voice features are beneficial for individuals who are blind, have vision impairments, or prefer to listen to content.  Below are steps to use this feature for iPhone and Android devices.  

iPhone

Enable Text-to-Speech:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" app.
  • Accessibility: Scroll down and tap on "Accessibility."
  • Spoken Content: Tap on "Spoken Content."
  • Speak Selection: Toggle on "Speak Selection" to enable text-to-speech for selected text.
  • Speak Screen: Toggle on "Speak Screen" to enable text-to-speech for the entire screen.

To Use Text-to-Speech:

  • Speak Selection: Highlight the text you want to be read aloud, then tap "Speak" from the context menu.
  • Speak Screen: Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to have the entire screen's content read aloud.

Android

Enable Text-to-Speech:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the "Settings" app.
  • Accessibility: Scroll down and tap on "Accessibility."
  • Text-to-Speech Output: Tap on "Text-to-Speech Output" (could be under "Screen reader" or similar on some devices).
  • Preferred Engine: Select your preferred text-to-speech engine (e.g., Google Text-to-Speech).
  • Settings for Text-to-Speech Engine: Tap on the settings icon next to your chosen engine to customize the language, voice, and speech rate.

To Use Text-to-Speech:

  • Select-to-Speak: Go back to the "Accessibility" menu, tap "Select-to-Speak," and toggle it on. Tap the new accessibility icon on the screen, then select text to be read aloud.
  • TalkBack: Go back to the "Accessibility" menu, tap "TalkBack," and toggle it on. This feature will read aloud all screen content and navigational elements as you use your phone.

Google Translate Icons

Google Translate: Translate text, speech, websites and More

Text Translation: 

  • Navigate to Google Translate.
  • Select the source and target languages.
  • Type or paste the text into the source text box.
  • The translated text will appear in the target text box.

Document Translation:

  • On the Google Translate homepage, click on "Documents."
  • Click "Browse your computer" to upload the document.
  • Select the source and target languages.
  • Click "Translate" to get the translated document.

Speech Translation:

  • Open the Google Translate app on your smartphone. 
  • Tap the microphone icon. 
  • Speak into the device, and the app will translate your speech in real time.
