University High School earned first place at the Science Bowl Regional competition, held on February 4. This is the team’s fifth win in six years, which is an impressive record, especially given the high level of competition, among not only public schools but also private schools in the region.
This annual U.S. Department of Energy competition, hosted by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, is traditionally a Jeopardy-style competition meant to test students’ science knowledge. This is the first year since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that the competition was held in person.
“These outstanding students showed determination, good sportsmanship and worked together, demonstrating the true spirit of a University High Trojan,” said Chair of Uni’s science department and coach David Knight. “Our students have an incredible depth of knowledge in each field of science. I am proud of how hard they worked and what they have accomplished.”
Team members are Benjamin Fan (captain), Wendy Cao, Nathan Ouyang, Julianne Wu, and Yufei Chen. They competed against more than 20 other schools from the Southern California area and excelled at answering questions ranging on topics such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and space and earth sciences.
The team prepared for months, studying and working together. Their hard work paid off and they will now advance to represent IUSD at the national competition in April. Congrats and good luck!
