Sierra Vista Middle School has earned the prestigious title of Southern California Science Olympiad Champions.
Science Olympiad is a scholastic competition where students compete in 23 events pertaining to various scientific disciplines including social science, earth and space science, physical science and chemistry, technology and engineering, and more. Each year, over 7,500 middle and high school teams from around the country compete in multiple levels of competition including regionals, states, and nationals.
The Sierra Vista team earned the top score in Division B at the State Science Olympiad Championship Tournament on April 9, virtually through the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
The team is made up of twenty students in grades seven through nine. They have remained busy throughout the season by competing in various invitational tournaments around the country building up to the Southern California State tournament. Our team took home 16 gold medals out of the 23 different events. There were several stand out performances including:
- Gold Medal: Anatomy and Physiology (Stanley Suen, Ferris Li)

- Gold Medal:Digital Structures (Gordon Wong, Dhruv Panchagatti)
- Gold Medal:Disease Detectives (Ariana Chen, Ferris Li)
- Gold Medal:Dynamic Planet (Michael Mao, Sharon Ma)
- Gold Medal:Experimental Design ( Dhruv Panchagatti, Aditya Peddi, Pragnya Ramkumar)
- Gold Medal:Green Generation (Liran Zhu, Gordon Wong)
- Gold Medal:Meteorology (Gordon Wong, Liran Zhu)
- Gold Medal:Mouse Trap Vehicle (Dhruv Panchagatti and Gordan Wong)
- Gold Medal: Road Scholar (Gordan Wong and Sharon Ma)
- Gold Medal:Rocks and Minerals (Joelle Cheeseman and Michael Mao)
- Gold Medal:Solar System (Aditya Peddi and Michael Mao)
- Gold Medal:Sounds of Music (George Liu and Leanna Lo)
- Gold Medal:Storm the Castle (George Liu and Leanna Lo)
- Gold Medal:Botany (Davina Pravin and Hannah Ke)
- Gold Medal: Write it Cad it (Madeline Cheng and Doyoung Lee)
In addition to gold medals, Sierra Vista received 10 Bronze and Silver medals! Congratulations to all competitors!
Sierra Vista will move forward to compete in the national Science Olympiad tournament also hosted by California Institute of Technology from May 13-14.
