Promote Campus Sustainability This New Year by Properly Sorting Your Trash!

Three bin systems explanation and images of bins

As we begin the New Year and welcome our students back from winter break, we would like to remind our community about the three-bin waste sorting system, which helps keep our campus and planet clean. This system is designed to reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with California’s SB 1383 organic recycling goals.

The three-bin system includes labeled bins for recycling, organics and landfill waste. Here’s how each bin works:

Blue Bin: Recycling

  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Clean cardboard and paper
  • Metal cans and foil
  • Glass bottles and jars

Green Bin: Organics

  • Food scraps, including fruit, vegetables, meat, bread and cheese
  • Food-soiled paper (like napkins or paper towels)

Gray Bin: Landfill

  • Non-recyclable and non-compostable items

IUSD school sites also work to reduce waste through food recovery share boxes—designated locations where students can place unopened or uneaten food and beverage items from their school-provided lunch. These boxes allow other children to take additional helpings of food or beverages at no cost and help curb additional food waste from ending up in landfills.

As our educational partners, we encourage you to take a moment to watch this video with your child(ren) and discuss how to use the three-bin system and share boxes on campus.
