On Thursday morning, IUSD Superintendent Terry Walker sent out an email to parents and community members indicating police would increase their presence at a handful of Irvine schools as the regional search continues for a former LAPD officer wanted in connection with multiple homicides. Here's the full text:
Dear IUSD community member:
In response to recent events involving a former LAPD officer wanted in connection with at least three homicides, the Irvine Police Department has stationed additional officers at several IUSD schools. This action was taken in an abundance of caution following a report that five Irvine students are family members of law enforcement officials who may have been targeted by the suspect.
Our understanding is that some of the families involved have elected to keep their children at home pending further information. Regardless, IPD will maintain a presence at Irvine and Woodbridge high schools, Lakeside and Venado middle schools, and Stone Creek Elementary School, providing additional support throughout the district as needed.
Again, please know that these schools are not targets, and no student has been specifically named; only individuals associated with the former officer’s dismissal have been reported as potential targets.
The safety of students and staff is the No. 1 priority of the Irvine Unified School District, and we are incredibly fortunate to have a close partnership with the Irvine Police Department. More information will be provided by IPD and our district as it becomes available. In the meantime we appreciate your patience and support.
