New Year, New Goals: Setting Realistic Goals

Notebook with "2025 Goals" written on it

Many people set goals for themselves at the start of the New Year—whether academic, personal or family-focused. Goal-setting can help foster a sense of purpose and achievement. Here are some helpful guidelines for establishing realistic goals for 2025 while prioritizing mindfulness.

Start Small and Ask “Why?”

When setting goals, consider breaking them into smaller, manageable steps rather than aiming for giant leaps. Begin by asking yourself, “Why?” Why is this goal important to me? What do I want the end result to be? Defining your purpose will give your goal clarity and make it easier to stay motivated.

Use the SMART Framework

Once your "why" is clear, structure your goals using the SMART framework:

  • Specific: Be clear about what you want to achieve.
  • Measurable: Identify how you will track progress.
  • Achievable: Set a goal that is within your reach.
  • Realistic: Ensure the goal aligns with your current situation and resources.
  • Time-based: Set a deadline to keep yourself accountable.

Most importantly, if you have a setback or change your goal, be kind to yourself. Use changes or challenges as opportunities to adapt, see new possibilities and persevere or pivot so that you reach the best goal for you.

Here’s to a great year ahead!
