IUSD Students Shine at State Science Olympiad Competition and Sierra Vista Takes Top Honors

Sierra Vista Science Olympiad Team

Sierra Vista Middle School’s Science Olympiad team (pictured above) earned the prestigious title of Southern California Science Olympiad Champions. This marks the third consecutive title for the team!

Sierra Vista’s team posted a record score of 74 points in the Middle School Division, beating out their competitors by over 50 points, at the State Science Olympiad Championship Tournament earlier this month at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

“I am extremely proud of our students and Charger Science Olympiad Community. With only 4 returning students from last year's team, the level of perseverance and diligence of such a young team was truly amazing to watch,” Coach Shaun Evola shared.

This year, Sierra Vista’s Science Olympiad team comprises 19 students in grades seven through nine. They have remained busy throughout the season by competing in various invitational tournaments throughout the country. Notably, Sierra Vista even hosted one of California’s largest middle and elementary school invitationals with over 70 teams competing in February.

In the High School Division, Northwood's team (pictured left) secured second place with 139 points, closely followed by University's team (pictured right) in third place with 163 points, out of a total of 32 competing teams. In several events of the competition, both teams earned first place, helping contribute to their overall high ranking and score.

Science Olympiad is a scholastic competition where students compete in 23 events related to various scientific disciplines including physical science, earth and space science, chemistry, technology and engineering, and more. Each year, more than 7,500 middle and high school teams from around the country compete in multiple levels of competition including regionals, states and nationals.

Sierra Vista will move forward and join state championship teams from across the country at the Science Olympiad National Tournament hosted by Michigan State University from May 24-25, 2024.

Congratulations to all our students and schools who competed in another incredible Science Olympiad season.
