Science Olympiad Teams Advance to the State Competition

OC Regional Science Olympiad Competition 2024

Sierra Vista Middle School, Jeffrey Trail Middle School, University High School, Portola High School and Northwood High School Science Olympiad teams placed among the top teams in their division levels at the highly competitive 2024 OC Regional Science Olympiad competition. These exceptional teams will now advance to the State Competition, scheduled to take place on April 6.

In the middle school division, Sierra Vista Middle School sent two teams to the Science Olympiad tournament, placing first and third out of 28 teams. Jeffery Trail Middle School secured their spot by placing fourth overall. All the teams competed in a variety of events in the fields of physics, anatomy, astronomy, chemistry, meteorology and coding. The engineering events, including 'Wheeled Vehicle,' 'Air Trajectory,' and 'Towers,' not only tested students' skills but also challenged their ability to adapt to new challenges and problem-solving scenarios.

At the high school level, teams engaged in twenty-four events, showcasing their expertise in cell biology, microbiology, computer science, astronomy and hands-on construction skills. This included crafting rubber band-powered airplanes, gravity-propelled vehicles, and balsa wood towers capable of supporting substantial masses. University High School placed second and Northwood placed third overall.

During Olympiad season, some teams may compete in up to 20 Olympiad competitions leading up to the regional, state and national competitions.

The State Competition will bring together the top middle school and high school teams from each Regional Tournament, vying for the coveted title of State Champion. The winners will be able to represent Southern California at the National Tournament in May. Annually, over 7,500 middle and high school teams from around the country participate in Science Olympiad at multiple levels of competition, including regionals, states and nationals.

Congratulations to all the teams who competed in the middle school and high school competitions, including Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, Jeffrey Trail Middle School, Venado Middle School, Lakeside Middle School, Vista Verde and Woodbridge High School.

Good luck at the State Competition, IUSD!
