The Irvine Police Department is urging residents to drop off expired or unneeded medications for disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, as the agency participates in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Irvine’s collection site will be at the Irvine Civic Center, located at One Civic Center Plaza. Drop-offs are free and anonymous. According to an IPD news release, the department typically collects more than 200 pounds of prescription drugs and other medications at the annual event. And that represents just one of the more than 3,000 collection sites that are operated by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Of course, the improper disposal of medications -- this includes flushing them down toilets or tossing them in the trash -- poses environmental hazards as well as public safety risks for kids.
