Important Announcement About Schools from Gov. Newsom Today

IUSD Planning Update 5

As you may know, Governor Newsom will provide an update on COVID-19 guidance for schools today, July 17, at noon. His announcement will broadcast on several major news stations and live stream on the Governor’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. If you are able, we encourage you to watch his update.

An
EdSource article published today forecast that, “Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to announce that all public and private schools in California counties on the state’s monitoring list for rising coronavirus infections would be required to close for in-class instruction and meet strict criteria in order to reopen.”

If the Governor gives this direction, all Orange County Schools, will be required to start the 2020-21 school year in a distance learning format until our county meets the requirements for re-opening schools with in-person instruction.

We understand a decision of this magnitude may generate questions and concerns for our community so, once again, we encourage you to watch the Governor's announcement today.  After the press conference, we will work to clarify any impact on IUSD’s current plans and provide another update with next steps for our families.  We realize that families are in the midst of selecting their academic models, and we want to assure you that our intention is to continue with the development and implementation of these models.  In order to make this possible, please continue with your selection and submit your preferred model by Sunday evening.

Please know that we will provide our families clarification after we hear the Governor’s announcement and understand the implications for our schools. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we all continue to operate in this ever-changing environment.
