Dear IUSD Community,
As we prepare for Thanksgiving and the fast-approaching holiday season, on behalf of the Board of Education and District leadership, we would like to take a moment to express our appreciation for students, staff, and families who all contribute to our shared success. Together, we are the “US” at the center of IUSD, and it is together that we support our more than 38,000 students on their journey to college, career, and life-readiness.
Our gratitude is more than a simple “thank you.” It is rooted in a deep appreciation for the diverse voices, perspectives, people, and cultures within the IUSD community who seek common ground centered around educational excellence and helping students cultivate the attitudes, skills, and knowledge necessary to become empowered learners and engaged citizens.
In education, where academic achievement is often the primary focus, the idea of gratitude may not be the first thought that comes to mind. Yet, we know that it holds the power to help transform the educational experience by creating positive learning environments in which students and families feel a sense of belonging and connection to their schools, peers, and teachers. In such an environment, intellectual risk-taking and a growth mindset can flourish, reshaping how students perceive themselves and their abilities.
When we create space for dialogue where curiosity leads, we model the kind of critical thinking and growth mindset that equip our students to be resilient, empowered, and well-rounded learners. Encouraging this approach can help students learn to navigate differences and engage in constructive conversations, problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork – all essential employable skills necessary for success in today’s workplace.
In the midst of this busy season, filled with competing priorities and a 24/7 news and social media cycle, we hope you will take a moment to pause and reflect on what you are grateful for. To learn more about the power of gratitude, see our 21-day gratitude challenge article in this month’s IUSD Insights. Also included is information about helping students find balance as they prepare for finals; setting your language and accessibility preferences for the Parent Portal, Parent Square, and school websites; and in Parent Education Workshops for November.
Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to supporting a culture of kindness, curiosity, and belonging.
With sincere gratitude,
Terry L. Walker
