Health

Health instruction within IUSD addresses:
  • Social, Mental, and Emotional Health
  • Injury Prevention, CPR, and Safety
  • Nutrition and Physical Fitness
  • Alcohol, Tobacco, Drug Prevention
  • Information on Sexual Health, HIV Prevention, and Gender Identity

The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) requires that students receive instruction on Sexual Health, HIV Prevention, and Gender Identity once in middle school and once in high school. IUSD has no plans to provide CHYA-related instruction in our elementary school grades, K-6.

Information on Sexual Health, HIV Prevention, and Gender Identity is provided using Teen Talk. Teen Talk can be previewed at your middle or high school, at the District Office, or online through the online parent preview provided by your school.

Health Advisory Committee:

The Health Advisory Committee meets several times a year to continuously review lessons, activities, videos, and guest speakers related to the California Healthy Youth Act. Dates and times of these meetings can be found here. The committee has approved guest speakers and supplemental videos for middle and high school and has amended the way in which Teen Talk will be used in middle and high school. Clicking on the active links in the last sentence will take you to these documents; videos can be previewed through the provided links.

Parents have the legal right to remove their student from all or part of sexual health and HIV prevention education. Schools are not allowed to permit parents to ONLY opt out of lessons that are focused on LGBTQ content such as gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation, as doing so could be considered discriminatory. A sample of the letter that your school will send you prior to the beginning of instruction on Sexual Health, HIV Prevention, and Gender Identity can be found here.
