Navigating the New Year Safely: Traffic Reminders

Traffic Safety Reminders

As the new year begins, the Irvine Unified School District wishes our students and families a safe start and reminds the IUSD community to prioritize traffic safety in our daily routines. To ensure the well-being of our students, we'd like to emphasize some crucial traffic safety reminders from the Irvine Police Department.

Driver Safety tips

During the hustle and bustle of drop-off and pick-up times, it is especially important to drive with caution and without distractions.  Give yourself extra time to get to and from school and avoid the temptation to rush. Follow all traffic signs and directions from school staff and crossing guards to help create a safe environment. Also, please do not let students get out of vehicles in traffic or cross in the middle of the road, especially on busy streets. Students should use designated crosswalks and remember to look both ways before exiting vehicles and crossing streets.

As a reminder, drivers should keep a watchful eye for pedestrians and cyclists and they should reciprocate by staying alert to vehicles.

Bicycle and E-Vehicle Reminders

If your student received a new bicycle, e-bike or e-vehicle over the winter break, remember a few key safety measures:

  • Different types of bicycles require specific safety precautions. Make sure your child is well-versed in its operation and safety features.  Riders should follow all rules of the road and ride responsibly, especially around pedestrians, children and pets.  For more detailed safety tips and e-vehicle information, please click here.
  • Students who ride e-vehicles to school must follow their school’s registration process. For more information, please contact your middle or high school administration office.
  • Ensure that your child's bicycle is registered with the Irvine Police Department. This simple step aids in the recovery of stolen bikes and helps law enforcement identify owners.

Visit the City of Irvine’s website for more Bike Safety Tips. In addition, The Irvine Police Department has created a traffic safety video with important tips for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers in and around school zones, driveways and crosswalks.

We're in this together, let's get there safely!
