IUSD Students Explore Innovative Solutions During 43rd Annual Science Fair

IUSD Science Fair

IUSD students shined during the District’s 43rd Annual Science Fair! More than 300 projects were submitted by students in grades 6-12, with nearly 200 projects advancing to the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair in March, which is more than any other school district in Orange County. Congratulations to all of our outstanding participants!

The IUSD Science Fair is an opportunity for students to explore their passions for science by completing either an inquiry or an engineering project. This optional experience is completed by individuals or small groups of students outside of the school day. This annual event is sponsored by Irvine Public Schools Foundation in partnership with Broadcom Foundation.

Sixth-grade project examples included:

  • AI Micromobility Detector
  • An Artificial Pancreas Model
  • Best Salinity for Brine Shrimp
  • BykeSyte: Another Pair of Eyes on the Road
  • Does Physical Activity Affect Memory Retention

Secondary project examples included:

  • Animal Populations in Action
  • Autism Game: A Clear Adaptive Online Game for Severely Autistic Kids
  • Eye Wear: An Assistive Navigational Wearable Device for Visually Impaired
  • Estimation of Orbital Perturbation in Black Hole and Neutron Star Binary Systems
  • Modeling California Heat Wave Exposure and Links to Dementia like Neurodegeneration in the Elderly

These projects represent only a handful of the tremendous scientific and engineering inquiries taking place throughout the District.  Thank you to all of our students who participated in this year's fair and to our dedicated educators, who are providing students with a strong science and engineering education.  Equipped with this foundation, IUSD students are already on their way to creating innovative solutions to address the world's challenges and will undoubtedly shape the future of science, engineering, and technology.

Awards Ceremonies

The high school awards ceremony was held at University Lab Partners earlier this week, on January 24.  During this ceremony, students had the opportunity to speak with industry leaders, discuss possible mentorship opportunities, and tour the University Lab Partner facilities.  The event was attended by IUSD Board Members Lauren Brooks, Jeff Kim, and Cyril Yu.

The awards ceremony for students in grades 6-8 was held at Woodbridge High School on January 17 and was attended by IUSD Board Members Katie McEwen and Cyril Yu and District leaders.
