BOARD POLICY - 6146
The Board of Education recognizes the positive impact of physical activity on student health, well-being, and academic achievement. The district shall provide all students, kindergarten through high school, the opportunity to be physically active on a regular basis through high-quality physical education instruction that is comprehensive and developmentally appropriate and aligned with the state's content standards and curriculum framework.
The purpose of physical education is for every student to develop the knowledge and skills for specific physical activities, to develop and maintain a fit and healthy body, to participate in regular physical activity, and to understand the short and long-term benefits of a physically active and healthy lifestyle. The overarching goal of the physical education program shall be to prepare students to make healthy choices, and develop lifelong fitness and wellness through physical activity.
Physical education classes shall be conducted in a coeducational, inclusive manner as defined by law (Education Code 220). The district shall provide instruction in physical education that ensures equal access and equal opportunities for participation for all students in grades K-12 regardless of gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, and mental or physical disability. Students with disabilities shall be provided accommodations in accordance with their individualized education program or Section 504 plan. In addition, no student will be excluded because of cultural practices or observances, or who may not be able to participate in vigorous exercise. Two years of physical education shall be required of all high school students to meet graduation requirements (BP 6146.7)
