Our own University High School rocketed to victory over the weekend in the regional round of the National Science Bowl competition at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. The round-robin, double-elimination tournament, held on Feb. 2, featured two dozen teams from Los Angeles, Orange and Santa Barbara counties. We’re told Uni fielded questions about Saturn's moon Mimas, something called parallel-plate capacitors and hydrogen bonding in organic molecules on its way to a final match win against Arcadia High School, which earned second place overall. Santa Monica High School came in third. With the win, the University High team earns an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl in April. Kevin Lee, Jiho Park, Justin Wang, Carl Lundstedt and Kevin Chen -- they're pictured above, along with their coach, Shannon Bunch, who is on the right -- also took home a trophy, some medals, a banner, NASA backpacks, calendars and at least one toy version of NASA's Mars Curiosity rover, according to a news release from JPL. Coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Bowl quizzes about 20,000 middle and high school students on biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and Earth and space sciences.
