School board members Huntley-Fenner and Wallin win re-election; Measure R passes

Sharon Wallin and Dr. Gavin Huntley-Fenner will retain their seats on the IUSD Board of Education after earning the most votes in Tuesday’s school board election.

Two seats were up for grabs on the five-member board, which sets policy for the district. When the last of the ballots were tallied late Tuesday night, Wallin, who currently serves as board president, had secured a third term with 21,355 votes. Fellow incumbent Huntley-Fenner, a scientist who was appointed in 2005 and re-elected the following year, won a second full term with 18,232 votes. Challenger Jodie Lu Stout Hoffman, an education evaluation consultant, finished third with 8,505 votes. In other election news, voters overwhelmingly backed local Measure R, which calls for the City of Irvine to continue its generous support of Irvine's schools through the Educational Partnership Fund and the Challenge Match Grant programs for an additional three years, beginning with 2011-12. A little more than 77 percent of the local electorate endorsed the measure, while 22.9 percent voted against it. For more information about races in Orange County, click here.
