District NewsFlash recently featured a story about a creative fundraiser at Alderwood Basics Plus, benefitting relief efforts in Haiti. Across town, Santiago Hills Elementary School took a different approach with a successful PTA-sponsored shoe drive. Working through Sport Chalet and the “Soles4Souls” charity, the Santiago Hills community spent last week collecting slightly worn footwear for the people of Haiti. In just four days, the school kicked in between 500 and 600 pairs of sneakers, boots and high-tops, meeting the charity's Jan. 31 deadline. “The kids and families were awesome in responding to the call of action to Haiti,” PTA parent Deb Griffith wrote in an e-mail. “It was great to have kids from various classes helping … to get them loaded, organized and piled into the car (door to door to ceiling, by the way). They had a blast seeing tangibly how a little can make a huge difference.”
