In addition to announcing the 2024-25 Teachers of the Year, IUSD announced four Teachers of Promise. This annual honor goes to first- or second-year instructors who go above and beyond while demonstrating professional curiosity and an unbridled enthusiasm for teaching.

This year’s four Teachers of Promise were recognized in front of their students and will be formally honored at the Excellence in Teaching Awards program in April. Click here for the 2024-25 Teachers of the Year honorees.

Kara Gilchrist – Teacher of Promise

Kara Gilchrist is a first-grade teacher at Northwood Elementary School who consistently seeks ways to encourage students and improve individual student support. She is known for being passionate and focused on teaching and for always looking for ways to celebrate small wins with her students and colleagues.

Kara serves as the site behavior lead, collaborating closely with English Language TOSAs to support student success. She is deeply committed to professional growth, consistently attending professional learning opportunities and actively seeking out feedback to refine her approach, all while working to implement new and innovative strategies with ease.

 

Alexandra Rowland – Teacher of Promise

Alexandra Rowland is an Education Specialist with Stonegate Elementary School. Her unwavering dedication to her students truly exemplifies the spirit of this honor. She has a remarkable ability to understand and address the unique needs of each student in her classroom, allowing her to create an inclusive environment where all learners can thrive. Her patience and compassion are evident in every interaction, building trust and encouragement that help her students reach their full potential.

Alex goes above and beyond by demonstrating an extraordinary work ethic that enhances her teaching practice. She skillfully navigates the complex aspects of Special Education, collaborating effectively with parents and colleagues to create comprehensive support systems. Alex not only educates but inspires. She already has made a lasting impact on her students’ lives and the broader educational community.

Sean Leavey – Teacher of Promise

Sean Leavey teaches English language learners at Lakeside Middle School. He exemplifies the highest standards of teaching through his calm, caring demeanor and superior work ethic. His steady and compassionate approach creates a supportive classroom environment where students feel safe to take intellectual risks and thrive academically and emotionally. Mr. Leavey constantly seeks to improve his practice, incorporating a wide range of effective instructional strategies tailored to meet the diverse needs of his students. Whether leveraging technology, fostering collaborative projects or designing hands-on activities, he ensures every lesson is engaging and impactful.

 

Tyler Alessi – Teacher of Promise

Tyler Alessi is a Vocal Music Teacher at Northwood High School. Tyler’s student-centric approach is apparent in each interaction with those in and beyond Northwood’s Vocal Music Program.  A Northwood graduate, Tyler is rebuilding one of the largest choral programs in the state. Unquestionably talented, he prioritizes establishing safe and inclusive communities for all students, regardless of ability, background or needs. Tyler’s positive mindset allows him to approach every lesson with a smile, recognizing each unique contribution, and celebrating every bit of growth regardless of how incremental. He brings a level of professionalism and experience that inspires those around him, yet finds the greatest satisfaction when empowering others to reach their potential. He exemplifies our district’s Continuous Improvement Efforts, modeling both humility and a growth mindset.
