Rules & Regulations

To ensure the safety of the students riding the school bus, whether the bus is operated by Irvine Unified School District or a Contractor hired by Irvine Unified School District, all riders must abide by the following: 

  1. Waiting for the bus 
    Orderly behavior is required at all bus stops. Students must stand in line, at least 12 feet back from the curb and must not approach the bus until it has stopped and the door has opened.
  2. Boarding the bus
    Students must be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is due. Students will only be allowed access to the bus, when boarding at their assigned stop. Departing the bus is allowed only at their assigned afternoon stop.
  3. Bus passes
    Every student who rides the bus must have a bus pass and be prepared to show it when boarding.

  4. Remain seated, facing forward with seat belts on
    School bus seats are specially designed to protect passengers. They can only be effective if riders always face the front and stay in their seats. If seat belts are available, they must be worn.

  5. Be polite and talk quietly
    Shouting, unnecessary loud noise or boisterous behavior is not allowed. For the safety of all aboard, the driver must be able to devote their full attention to the road. Passengers are required to remain quiet at all railroad crossings. The driver must be able to hear if a train is approaching.
  6. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
    Inappropriate behavior like fighting, pushing, horse-play or throwing an object is not allowed. Aside from injuries this behavior can cause, the driver might become distracted resulting in an accident.
  7. No eating, drinking or gum chewing
    Eating and gum chewing may create a choking hazard, spilled drinks can cause someone to slip.
  8. Items not allowed on the bus
    Animals (except service dogs), glass objects, skate boards or hazardous articles of any kind will not be allowed on the bus.
  9. Vandalism of school bus consequences
    Vandalism of school buses may result in suspension or revocation of the student's riding privilege. Parents may be held financially liable for the cost of repairing damage to school buses.
  10. Shoes worn on the bus
    Shoes must always be worn while on the bus. No cleats or spikes are allowed as they can harm the protective flooring of the bus.
  11. Exiting the bus
    When exiting the bus, always follow the driver's instructions completely. If you need to cross the street, cross in front of the bus when the driver directs you to.
  12. Cameras
    Video cameras may be used on school buses to monitor student behavior.  Boarding a school bus is considered consent to be photographed.  Video images will not be made public.
