ADDING TO EXISTING OR PLACING NEW STRUCTURES AT DISTRICT SITES

ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION - 7110.1

The Irvine Unified School District recognizes that circumstances may sometimes exist whereby it is desirable, appropriate or necessary to increase the square footage at a given site, or to locate structures of non-educational use on school or District property. Additional square footage may take the form of permanent construction or relocatable structures. Structures of non-educational use shall be added only to the extent that such structures do not hinder the provision of education at the site. All structures shall conform to applicable local building codes and/or to State Building Codes, as jurisdiction allows. The Board of Education shall approve all applications for such use in the manner required by State law.

Whenever additional structures are contemplated being added to existing school or District facilities, adjacent homeowners shall be notified. Adjacent homeowners are defined as those within 300 feet of the proposed structure or within sight line of the proposed location. In the case of a school site, notification to the entire school community will be done through any means that effectively reaches each family not later than the notice to adjacent homeowners.

Adjacent property owners, appropriate homeowner associations and local media will be sent notices by mail no later than 14 days prior to the meeting at which the placement of these structures will be discussed. This meeting will take place in the evening to provide accessibility by the majority of those noticed. The notification letter will include the date of the Board meeting, scheduled subsequent to the site meeting, at which Board review of the proposed placement is scheduled to occur.
