Irvine is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation.  As a result, the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) is one of the fastest growing school districts in the nation.  To help IUSD manage this unprecedented growth, we have engaged in districtwide, long-term planning designed to meet the needs of all IUSD students.  Part of that plan includes the consideration of boundary adjustments for three of our six middle schools and three of our high schools.  While this is not a districtwide adjustment, you have received this letter, because you reside in an area that could be affected.

Areas Under Consideration
Attendance area adjustments under consideration for implementation in the 2019-20 school year include some neighborhoods currently assigned to Jeffrey Trail, Sierra Vista, and Venado middle schools, as well as Irvine, Northwood, and Portola high schools.

  • The middle school boundary adjustments could affect students who are currently enrolled in kindergarten through 5th grade who will enter 7th grade in the fall of 2019 or later and reside in the Stonegate Elementary School, Northwood Elementary School, and Cypress Village Elementary School attendance areas.
  • The high school boundary adjustment could affect students who are currently enrolled in kindergarten through 7th grade who will enter 9th grade in the fall of 2019 or later and reside in the Stonegate Elementary School attendance area.
  • Current high school students, eighth grade students and students residing outside of the attendance areas referenced above will not be impacted by any of these proposed attendance area adjustments.

Parent Forums
IUSD is hosting three parent forums to present more detailed information on the boundary adjustment options being considered, to answer questions, and to receive parent input, which will be presented to the Board of Education.  Parents are welcome to attend any one of the following forums.

  • Monday, November 13, in the Venado MS Multi-Purpose Room, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, November 15, in the Sierra Vista MS Multi-Purpose Room, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 16, in the Jeffrey Trail MS Multi-Purpose Room, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Boundary Advisory Committee
To ensure the IUSD community has a strong voice in the boundary recommendation process, the Board of Education directed staff last spring to establish a Boundary Advisory Committee.  This 36-person committee is comprised of parent representatives, high school students, teachers, principals, and district staff from each of the areas and schools that could be affected.  This group has been meeting and working together since August to develop several possible boundary options, which will be presented during the parent forums.

The Boundary Committee recommendations, coupled with parent feedback, will be presented to the Board during the Board of Education meeting on December 12, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the District Office (5050 Barranca, Irvine).  This meeting is open to the public.  For those who cannot attend this meeting, you may watch it live by visiting iusd.org/livestream or on Cox channel 39 or AT&T U-verse channel 99.  The meeting recording will also be available on demand the following day at iusd.tv.
