AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness, and success in a global society.
What is AVID?
AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled, college prep, A-G approved elective class during the school day, based on writing as a tool of learning, the inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The four main components of the program are:
- Academic instruction
- Tutorial support
- Motivational activities
- College and career opportunity knowledge
Who is an AVID Student?
AVID students are students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students may often not realize their full potential academically. In the identification process, several criteria are taken into consideration, including but not limited to the following:
- State test scores
- 2.0-3.5 GPA
- Attendance
- Desire and determination
- First in the family to attend college
- Historically underrepresented in four-year institutions
AVID Objectives at IUSD
Provide academic instruction and other support to students and prepare them for their respective future
Improve organizational skills i.e. thinking, time, materials, etc.
Improve critical thinking skills
Increase student involvement in community service
Prepare and support students for entry and success in the most rigorous courses
Empower all students to achieve academic excellence, and success in a global society
