Supporting Special Education in Partnership With the IUSD Community

Special Education Students

As part of our commitment to special education, IUSD recently celebrated National Special Education Day, a day that marks the passage of the Federal law in 1972 and underlines the commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment. IUSD recognizes the collective efforts of our teachers, students, families and administrators who work hand-in-hand to support Special Education.

IUSD’s Special Education Department plays a pivotal role in implementing programs, partnerships and initiatives that meet the diverse needs of students who may need specialized academic instruction and intervention. Partnerships and key focuses include:

  • Special Education Community Advisory Committee (CAC): The CAC, a collaborative partnership of parents of children with special needs, parents of general education students, educators, and community agencies, works collectively to support activities on behalf of students with special needs.
  • Department Goal: Through an explicit focus on inclusive school communities, our Special Education Department will continue to work in partnership with our IUSD colleagues and families to ensure high-quality and rigorous instruction as well as individualized support for each student to meet their personal best in their least restrictive environment.

These programs and partnerships are just a glimpse of our commitment to providing specialized education that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting.

“The Special Education Department truly believes that it is our role to support all staff so that children with disabilities are included in general education. We know that every child in the district is unique and deserves the care and instruction that's appropriate for them,” stated Special Education/SELPA Executive Director Melanie Hertig. “We approached this work with inclusive practices at the forefront and are always looking for ways to enhance the work that we're doing so that all children have access to a quality program and the least restrictive environment.”
