A Rancho San Joaquin Middle School eighth-grader has emerged as one of 60 semifinalists in the inaugural Google Science Fair, which is asking voters to select its People’s Choice Award winner. Nimal Subramanian submitted a project that examines whether anti-cancer agents used in food – such as turmeric, cumin, pepper, ginger, hibiscus and beet – inhibit the germination and protein content in experimental seeds. His was one of approximately 7,500 submissions received by Google from more than 10,000 students in 90 countries. Voters will now decide which team or individual receives the People’s Choice Award – and the $10,000 scholarship that goes with it. In addition, Nimal remains in contention to be selected as one of 15 finalists who will ultimately be flown to Google’s headquarters for a last round of judging, conducted by a panel of renowned scientists and innovators.
