A team of Eastshore Elementary School sixth-graders has taken up the cause of banning the sale of shark fins after entering a regional science contest, The Orange County Register reports. Though it was announced recently that the Eastshore students won second place in their division in this year’s QuikSCience Challenge, their advocacy work continues through a new website at www.ilovesharks.org. The sixth-graders, led by teacher Bill Brooks, are selling T-shirts on the site – like the ones pictured to the right – to benefit the shark conservation group Iemanya Oceanica. Meanwhile, they’re also urging local lawmakers to support Assembly Bill 376, which aims to outlaw the sale of shark fins in California. For placing second in the QuikSCience competition, the team will spend four days in June on Catalina Island at the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies, according to Brooks.
