From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Assistant Superintendent Cassie Parham, Math and Science Coordinator Mark Sontag and District Literacy Specialist Kathleen Cooke will discuss how and why the standards came into existence, how the Smarter Balanced Assessments will be structured and the major instructional shifts that will occur as schools begin implementation.

The session, free and open to the public, will be held in the Board Room of the District Office, located at 5050 Barranca Parkway in Irvine.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is part of a national reform movement that’s been embraced by 45 states, including California. Set to be phased in over the next two years, the new standards place more of an emphasis on thinking critically and creatively, articulating positions, taking intellectual risks and collaborating effectively.
