Board members and district staff recently broke ground on the long-awaited athletic facility at University High School, which got us to thinking about IUSD’s original stadium at Irvine High. We're told the shot above was taken in September of 1977 by the Irvine World News, which later turned it over to the Irvine Historical Society, which in turn shared it with us. Similarly, the Irvine High stadium has long been shared by all four IUSD high schools, resulting in a heavy workload and more Thursday night football games than students and fans might otherwise desire. The new 2,940-seat facility, set to open in the fall, will serve as the home field for both Uni and Woodbridge High. Do you have an old photo of the Irvine Unified School District you’d like to share? Send it to ianhanigan@iusd.org, along with some basic caption information, including names, dates and locations. We may publish it on the NewsFlash as part of our IUSD at 40 project. Images from IUSD’s first four decades will be posted on Thursdays.
