Members of the public are invited to attend a special forum on Wednesday, Dec. 19 to talk about school safety following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn. Irvine Mayor Steven S. Choi has invited IUSD Superintendent Terry Walker, Tustin Unified Superintendent Gregory A. Franklin and the community to participate in the Irvine Town Hall Meeting for School Safety, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the theater at Irvine High School. Irvine High is located at 4321 Walnut Ave. Guests are encouraged to park in the campus' student lot off Escolar, or at nearby Heritage Park. Overflow parking will also be temporarily available on the north side of Walnut Avenue. Following introductory remarks by Mayor Choi, Superintendents Walker and Franklin are scheduled to talk about the procedures and strategies employed to promote school safety in their respective districts. Irvine Police Chief Dave Maggard will then offer an overview of the Public Safety Department’s equipment, training and special assignments, with the assistance of Lt. Dave Klug. The meeting will conclude with a question-and-answer session led by Chief Maggard. The program will be recorded, and though it won't air live, it will be shown regularly beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday on ICTV-Channel 30 for Cox cable subscribers; Channel 99 for U-Verse subscribers; and through the City’s website at cityofirvine.org.
