Ten years ago, shortly after Canyon View Elementary School opened for business, the school’s students and staff packed a couple of time capsules and planted them in the ground out front near the flagpole. What did they place inside? We’re about to find out – at least with regard to one of the capsules. Principal Susan Kemp said Canyon View's grounds crew unearthed the two tube-shaped containers earlier this month, as shown in the photo. Unfortunately, one was completely waterlogged, leaving its contents mostly unrecognizable. The other appears to be in pretty good shape though, and at 9 a.m. on Jan. 6 its 2000-era contents will be revealed as Canyon View celebrates 10 years of educational excellence. Ron Fritsch, the school’s original principal, is expected to be on hand for the opening, as are members of the IUSD Board of Education, Superintendent Gwen Gross and possibly some students who were around when the blue capsules were sealed and buried back on Dec. 1, 2000. As for the breached tube, Kemp said it mostly contained mushy classrooms items, including soaked letters and notes about students. “We opened the waterlogged one to take a peek,” she said, “and the remnants of what I described were inside, in addition to a very soggy Harry Potter book. We are hoping the intact tube will have better results.”
