Frequently Asked Questions

As a Support Provider, how often do I actually need to meet with my Participating Teacher?

    • The expectation of support from a Support Provider includes:
    • At least four hours of mentoring support each month
    • At least one hour of dedicated face-to-face meetings, per month, per PT
    • Mentoring support may include the two hour Monthly Meeting
    • Google docs may be used for online collaboration
    • Google hangout or Skype may be used for conferencing, but should not replace the dedicated hour of face-to-face mentoring required

Does Induction need to be completed in two consecutive years? Or, can it be done with a year or two break between the two years?

    • If you are not employed, then the answer is easy, it doesn't need to be done in consecutive years. If you are employed as a teacher, yes, it needs to be done in consecutive years.

What if I received a job opportunity in another district or decide to sub next year?

    • Everything you complete this year in our Induction program is transferable to other districts. It is difficult to participate in an Induction program as a substitute, unless it is in a long-term assignment. We will need assurance from your site administrator that the long term substitute position will last all year and your participation must be approved.

If I do not want units for Induction, do I have to attend the meetings? Can I just complete the modules?

    • The district’s expectation is that all new teachers enrolled in our program will be in attendance at all program meetings. We understand that coaches and teachers who have been hired to do after school activities will occasionally have to miss a meeting due to their employment obligations. Sometimes they coach multiple seasons or supervise after school clubs and do miss more than a couple of meetings. If we can verify that it is due to their job, then it is not held against them to complete the program, but they will not be eligible to earn units. We allow teachers to miss one meeting and still earn all three units. More than one missed meeting is reviewed by the Advisory Council to whether or not the person is fulfilling their professional and program requirements.

After completing the Induction program, would that clear my preliminary credential?

    • Yes, you will have earned your Clear Credential, through your participation in Induction and completion of the IUSD Induction program.

Who qualifies to be an Early Completion Option Candidate? How can I apply?

Here is an application that gives the criteria for who may qualify. The steps that will need to occur to receive approval are as follows:

    1. The application must be completed by you
    2. The Induction staff will verify and review the information
    3. The Induction leadership team must observe you in the classroom
    4. There will be a discussion between your site administrator and the Induction leadership team
    5. The team’s findings will be taken in front of the Induction Advisory Council for review and approval

As for the Support Provider (aka: mentor teacher) do I approach a teacher and ask them or do you choose? How does that work?

    • Induction leadership will assign you a Support Provider with input from your site administrator. There is no need to recruit a potential mentor.

What qualifications do I need to participate in the Induction program? Do I need to teach a minimum number of hours or days each day or week?

    • To participate in the IUSD program, you must hold a current preliminary credential (SB2042 or Ryan) and have a class available to assess and teach on a regular basis, and to complete at least one series of lessons each year.

What can I do if my credential will expire before I can fulfill my Induction requirements?

    • The state has provided new teachers with the ability to request an extension for your preliminary credential. Please talk with a credentialing technician within 6 months of the expiration date.

Does Induction cost money, why, and who has to pay?

    • Why?
      • Unfortunately, the state no longer funds the “BTSA” program and therefore we no longer use the name.  Due to the current fiscal climate, participation in the IUSD Induction does costs money, but is minimal.
    • Who?
      • All participants in the IUSD Induction program are required to pay. Contracted Certificated IUSD employees are required to participate in their first two years of teaching. IUSD has also opened the program to private school teachers who would like to clear their credentials.
    • How?
      • The entire amount can be paid by the last day of the first month you are enrolled in the Induction program, or monthly deductions will be set up to begin in the first paycheck, or you can make three scheduled payments throughout the year. Unfortunately, monthly deductions are not available for private school teachers. Please refer to the Participating Teacher Agreement for specific information.

Do you have any idea how much would be deducted from my paycheck if I chose to pay that way?

    • Once the Participating Teacher Agreement is signed and turned into Human Resources, it is copied and sent to Payroll. If the Agreement is submitted before the 15th of the month, the deductions will begin that month. The total amount of participating in Induction (mentioned in previous question) will be divided over the remaining months of the school year.

Is there an opportunity to earn units by participating in Induction?

    • We partner with local Institutes for Higher Learning (IHE) to provide two ways to earn units through the Induction program. By fully participating in the Induction program, Participating Teachers have the opportunity to earn 3 units each year. Attendance at all meetings and reviews, as well as completion of the formative system and all documents, are required for the 3 units.
      • Induction Learning Cycle = 2 units
      • Monthly Meeting Attendance = 1 unit
      • The units are only available for active Participating Teachers
    • Completion of the Professional Growth Application MUST be completed at the beginning of the program.
      • Human Resources MUST APPROVE application prior to class starting
    • Participating Teachers may also attend the many Induction approved and hosted professional learning opportunities to earn 1-2 additional units each year.
      • To qualify for an additional 1-2 units: 15 hours of professional learning classes= 1 unit.
      • The trainings/classes must be Induction approved, after work hours, and hosted by IUSD
    • Registration Forms will be available to Participating Teachers in the spring of the school year when the unit(s)  is earned. The unit application is due to the Induction office by September 30th.  No exceptions.
      • $50 per unit; NOT INCLUDED in the cost of Induction
      • Request Official Transcripts from Brandman
    • Official transcripts are the responsibility of the Participating Teacher and must be submitted to Human Resources by November 15th for consideration of potential movement on the salary scale.
