Substitute Teaching Employment Process

Applications for substitute teachers are accepted only when posted on our employment Opportunities page AND ON EDJOIN.ORG.

Irvine Unified School District hires substitute teachers from August through February of each school year. Please visit for all available positions in our district.

An Emergency Substitute Rate is currently in effect until further notice. Daily Sub rate is $180/full day (anything over 4 hours) and $95/half day (anything under 4 hours). The long term rate is $220/day and goes into effect on the 16th consecutive day in the same assignment.

If you need to obtain an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, the easiest way to acquire one is to contact the Orange County Department of Education Credentials Department to apply for your permit.
