Congratulations to Lucia Yu from Rancho San Joaquin Middle School for placing third in the Orange County Spelling Bee! She competed in 13 rounds over two days and earned a $100 cash prize.
Presented by the Orange County Department of Education, the County Spelling Bee began with 130 standout spellers who had won their school or district bees. On February 26, they gathered at OCDE’s Costa Mesa administrative campus to take a 25-question written spelling and vocabulary test. From that group, the top 27, which included IUSD students from Beacon Park K-8 School, Eastwood Elementary School, Lakeside Middle School and Sierra Vista Middle School, were invited to participate in Saturday’s final oral round.
Over the next several hours came a volley of challenging words like “supercilious,” “tussock,” “dyspeptic,” “vacillate,” “utilitarian” and “breviloquence.”
