Last week there was a lot of Good News Around the District. Students were honored for their achievements, our schools made videos that really moved us, and teachers, staff and families continued to find ways to connect and engage, while prioritizing mental health, kindness and gratitude.
As part of Earth Day last month, IUSD’s Sustainability team held a poster contest asking students to create an original work of art on a poster demonstrating the theme of “Climate Action” or actions that fight climate change. Students showcased the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling through their artistic educational posters.
The Weekly 5 for May 11-15 offers tips to help IUSD students and families record and reflect on their experiences during this historical moment in our Nation’s history due to the COVID-19 crisis. Students can become a historian or journalist, sharing their unique experiences, while sharpening writing, research, creative and wellness skills.

Mental Health Awareness Week is May 4-8 and is the perfect opportunity for students, staff and families to take care of each other and practice self-care. With the current changes in our world, it is common to experience a myriad of emotions. The loss of normalcy and connection, along with possible economic and health concerns can result in children, teens and adults feeling some degree of grief – a sense of loss and sadness. It’s important to acknowledge these feelings, while learning ways to manage them and to potentially find meaning in them.
During an April 28 press briefing, Governor Newsom discussed the possibility of schools reopening for the 2020-21 school year starting this summer. On April 29, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond issued a statement about his intent to explore this possibility with state and national leaders.
IUSD's part-day preschool program is open for registration for the 2020-21 school year.
This week’s Weekly Five is focused on connecting IUSD families to resources and services, including meals, technology, mental health and wellness supports, long-term food and housing assistance, academic enrichment resources, and tips for staying connected.
Each year, IUSD teachers, classified staff and administrators work together to develop school calendars for the years ahead, for both traditional and year-round schools. IUSD would like feedback from our community before we finalize these calendars for the next two academic school years.
