Lakeside Middle School's 8th-grade Pentathlon team is gearing up for the United States Academic Pentathlon in Phoenix, Arizona this May after securing second place in the California competition. Only the top four teams in each state are invited to the national Academic Pentathlon. This is Lakeside Middle School's third consecutive year qualifying for the national competition.

In addition to their impressive overall second-place finish, the team took first place in the Super Quiz segment of the competition, demonstrating their expertise in various academic disciplines. Several students also showcased their knowledge by winning individual medals.

Heading to the national competition to represent Lakeside are the following students:

  • Yun Jen Yeh
  • Katie Nagai
  • Rudra Thakur
  • Joshua Robertson
  • Hanming Li
  • Esther Ahn
  • Amogh Sharma
  • Claire Karimi
  • Brian Quinonez

These students dedicated themselves to weekly meetings, diligently delving into this year’s theme, "Technology and Humanity."

The United States Academic Pentathlon is a comprehensive scholastic competition comprising five distinct events, tailored for middle school students. It merges the benefits of Academic Decathlon with the rigors of both team and individual challenges. During the national competition, the team will undergo a series of rigorous tests designed to evaluate their knowledge and skills across various subjects such as fine arts, literature, mathematics, science and social science.

Students participating in Academic Pentathlon teams are categorized based on their grade-point averages: Honor (GPAs of 3.80 or above), Scholastic (GPAs of 3.20 to 3.79), and Varsity (GPAs of 3.199 or below). This structure ensures equitable opportunities for all students to compete and excel.

Congratulations to our Lakeside Pentathletes for their outstanding achievements and best of luck as they compete at the United States Academic Pentathlon.
